Ko Awatea lived up to its name on 11 May as people gathered for the dawn blessing.
The name Ko Awatea means first light, so it was fitting that the blessing was held at dawn. The sun rose and the first shafts of light began to appear, the brief rain storm passed and it was an amazing sight as Ko Awatea came out of the shadows and slowly came to life to embrace the new day and ultimately its new beginnings.
The Blessing paves the way for people to start using the Centre and acknowledges the endless possibilities that Ko Awatea has to offer. The occasion also provided an opportunity to thank all of the people who helped make the Centre a reality.
Many thanks to the Kaumatua for guiding us through the process.
