On 10 July students gathered to hear from Jenni Coles, Director of Hospital Services at Counties Manukau Health.
Listening to one of the most powerful women at Counties Manukau Health was inspirational. Jenni Coles, Director of Hospital Services, convinced everyone that if a job comes up that you think you can do, don’t wait to be ready – put your hand up now. Once you get there, you can develop the additional skills you need to do the role.
Jenni started here back in the 1970s, with her first two years at Kingseat Psychiatric Hospital, where she “toughened up.” Over the next 30 years, she negotiated with her managers to work family-friendly hours in her chosen field of Occupational Therapy, and grabbed opportunities for extra study and career development. Hard work and persistence have paid off for Jenni, along with a belief that important clinical skills – assessing, planning, implementing and checking – can be applied to life in general. And her final message: you have lots to contribute, so grab every opportunity, and be true to your families and communities.
