Rachel is an author, artist, advocate and speaker. After losing her daughter Evie, who had a rare chromosome condition, Rachel turned her talent to capturing the beauty and abilities of other children with ‘Super Powers’ – a term she coined to flip the deficit mentality often reached for when describing disability.
Rachel travelled the length and breadth of New Zealand photographing ordinary families being made extraordinary through the journeys their children are taking them on. Her stunning photographs of the children, alongside conversations with their parents, are presented in the Super Power Baby Project – an award-winning photographic art book that offers fresh insights and images to our understanding and language regarding disability.
Rachel’s advocacy does not shy from the notion that genetic syndromes bring with them their share of challenge, grief and difficulty. She provides a strong message of celebrating uniqueness, giving hope, and challenging the deficit mentality.
