A Counties Manukau Health initiative which began as a “grassroots movement”’ among staff has received national accreditation at Ko Awatea.
At an evening function for invited guests held in late February, CM Health received CEMARS (Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme) certification from carboNZero Holdings Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Landcare Research. This certification recognises that CM Health has measured the carbon footprint of Middlemore Hospital and Manukau SuperClinic and Surgery Centre, and put together a management plan to reduce it. In doing so, CM Health has become the first district health board/hospital in Australasia to receive CEMARS certification.
Dr Ann Smith, the acting CEO of carboNZero Holdings, applauded the district health board on its initiative.
“We are really, really delighted to see such a prominent organisation as Middlemore Hospital, and such a large and complex organisation, able to go through the programme and come out the other side with certification,” she said.
CM Health Board Chairman, Professor Gregor Coster, and Director of Strategic Development, Margie Apa, were on hand to receive the certificate. Both acknowledged the role that support from staff has played in kick-starting the organisation’s journey towards environmental sustainability.
“This began as a grassroots movement amongst staff. From the first time it was mentioned in (CEO) Geraint Martin’s blog, it received an overwhelming response from staff… and we are extremely proud as an organisation to support that,” Margie said.
In fact, stories were shared from throughout the hospital of staff who have been taking turns to take their office’s recycling home at the end of each week.
The Environmental Sustainability team, led by Dr David Galler and Project Manager, Debbie Wilson, is now working to implement the management plan, making it easier for staff to do the right thing by the environment. Planned initiatives to reduce the organisation’s carbon footprint involve making improvements to waste disposal (including recycling), transport and energy efficiency (such as using computer shutdown systems and minimising paper usage).
“Every single item that we use has its own carbon footprint and I think we need to be quite conscious of that,” said David. “We like to think that when it comes to the redesign of our buildings and our services, sustainability will become a lens that those decisions will be made through… as almost everything that we do to reduce our greenhouse gases in healthcare delivery is also good for health outcomes.”
About carboNZero Holdings Limited
carboNZero Holdings Limited is an internationally accredited greenhouse gas (GHG) certification programme that provides assurance for organisations making GHG emissions footprint measurement, reduction and/or carbon neutrality claims. The programme offers two certification options – CEMARS® (Certified Emissions Measurement And Reduction Scheme) and carboNZeroCertTM certification (certified emissions measurement, reduction, and offsetting). It helps organisations achieve their certification by providing tools and support to prepare for verification of their conformance to internationally recognised standards in GHG measurement and the programme rules.
Our programme is the World’s first internationally accredited GHG certification programme under ISO 14065. Our accreditation body, the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ), was established by the Australian and New Zealand governments and works with other international bodies, such as the International Accreditation Forum, to ensure international acceptance of its accredited bodies and programmes.
