All of us make food choices every day. We asked the question, “which is healthier? A muffin or a slice of brownie?”
This question turned a lot heads, urging more than 90 people in the Ko Awatea Centre to take to their phones and computers and find out the answer.
The answer is on our webpage – Challenge the Cake – an initiative encouraging healthier catering options to be made available to staff and visitors at Ko Awatea.
This question – along with a series of others – encourages staff and visitors to the Ko Awatea Centre to consider whether our daily food choices best support our health and wellbeing.
See it live!

‘Challenge the Cake’ is a team of four individuals – Monique, Suz , Megan and Brooke- who love food and want to create opportunities for our staff and community to be healthier. We aim to achieve this through education, inspiring others to be role models of healthy food choices, and by making healthier options easier to identify, access and understand.
We are all aware that our community in Counties Manukau experiences a high level of overweight and obesity, and diet related illness. With this in mind, the ‘Challenge the Cake’ team would like to create a world in which we have more options, where healthy choices are easier to access, and where we share these with others as we socialise, celebrate and learn together. In doing so, we just might create a world where we are truly ‘healthy together’ and transform Ko Awatea into a community of role models who promote healthy eating, and look after our whaanau.
Check out our webpage to hear about everything we are doing to create this world. We also have an app coming soon to help simplify all the food messages out there and put the power back into the hands of the consumer.
