We frequently interact with our consumers but often fail to engage deeply or in a way that leads to improving services.
There are a range of opportunities to engage with individual consumers, advisory groups, consumer councils and the community at the level of direct care, in organisational design and governance, and strategically.
This “deep dive” session will illustrate the value of engagement and explain how to engage, whom to engage and when to engage.
We will share the development and direction of the Counties Manukau Health Consumer Council as a case study. We will demonstrate how the Consumer Council has helped to create a heightened awareness and understanding of the experiences of patients and whānau across our community and how we work in partnership to co design services.
Prior to this session you will receive some key reading which will be used within some of the discussions we have.
People Powered is one of the five strategic themes in the New Zealand Health Plan. It aims to achieve a greater focus on understanding people and better engagement with people when designing services.
The Health Safety and Quality Commission has highlighted the importance of engaging and partnering with consumers and whānau through the publication of the capability framework From Knowledge to Action, published in October 2016. http://www.hqsc.govt.nz/assets/Quality-Improvement/PR/From-knowledge-to-action-Oct-2016.pdf
Understanding and application of methods to improve staff and consumer experiences is essential for all, including those who are working in health or other public services.
