These days, cardiac investigation unit team leader Belinda Buckley enjoys more open discussions with her staff.
Although Belinda has been in healthcare management for more than 20 years, she says completing the Foundations of Management course, offered free to Counties Manukau Health staff, has revitalised her leadership skills.
Belinda, who plans to send other leaders in her team on the course, says she has changed the way she runs performance reviews, among other things. In the past, she says, her reviews were somewhat “prescribed”. Now, she gives her team more opportunity to talk and runs the reviews in a less formal way.
Foundations of Management is designed to empower new managers at CM Health, according to programme facilitator and people development consultant Di Lemm.
“People come into CM Health and are often highly skilled clinicians but perhaps do not have managerial skills. The Foundations of Management programme was established to develop those skills,” Di says.
Belinda says the course helped her understand her personality type and how it relates to other people. She is now able to have more effective and timely discussions with staff.
“The other areas that really resonated with me were around conversations [with staff] and being able to step in early and not wait until things became a big deal,” she says.
Having more effective discussions is similarly one of the takeaway skills section head occupational therapist Vicky Harding identifies since completing the course a few months ago.
“I would always have team meetings, but I am a lot more prepared for them now with an agenda for me and the team and I leave time open for discussion. The way I structure things now is more focussed around team communication and decision making because if everyone is included, while it takes longer to get to the end, the result sits better with everybody else.”
Like Belinda, Vicky says understanding her personality type has been invaluable, allowing her to turn so-called personality weaknesses into positives. She is now better able to delegate and feels more confident in her decision making abilities.
Foundations of Management provides participants with an overview of the key knowledge and skills they need to be confident managers at CM Health. The programme consists of 10 full-day workshops, with the overall themes being: self-awareness using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, communication, developing performance, quality improvement, recruitment, and managing performance.
