In early 2014, a collaborative team led by Clinical Nurse Director, Jacqui Wynne-Jones, created the Patient Safety Leadership Walk Rounds. In the Leadership Walk Rounds, a team of six CM Health staff visit a ward or unit to discuss patient safety. While the make-up of the team varies to ensure freshness, at least one senior clinical leader participates in every Leadership Walk Rounds.
Last week the patient safety leadership walk round group visited the Medical Assessment Unit of the Emergency Department. We were warmly welcomed by Janice Stickland, the Acting CNM of Medical Assessment Unit into this fabulous facility.
The group interviewed front line staff around their perceptions of how safe they believed the unit was, scanned the environment to assess how safe it was, and interviewed a number patients to gather their perceptions of how safe they felt in this area. On this day we were also joined by Helen Bevan – Chief Transformation Officer of NHS Improving Quality.
Helen Bevan was interested to shadow and learn how we conduct our Safety Walk Rounds at CM Health. Helen was impressed with the way we have formulated our questions to ask frontline staff how safe they feel actually delivering care and whether they would be comfortable if a family member needed to be admitted to their area.
Most organisations do not specifically focus on patient perceptions and this is learning Helen has stated she will take back to the NHS for their consideration.
