The primary thread that runs through the multiple roles I have held in my career to date is a deep interest in transformation and problem solving. It’s why I became a lawyer. However when I started practicing I realized that lawyers don’t really resolve problems because adversarial litigation doesn’t allow root causes to be surfaced and addressed. I then discovered Alternative Dispute Resolution and eventually ended up working as a mediator of employment and industrial disputes. A further realisation led me to conclude that much of this work – while resolving the issues that gave rise to the dispute between the parties – did not very often address the deeper systems issues that gave rise to the disputes in the first place. My work since then has been an attempt to learn the skills necessary to address workplace systems issues. This has been an amazing learning journey that has covered change management, organizational design, quality improvement and building effective work place relationships.
