On Wednesday 5 September 2012 a DEU Celebration was held in Ko Awatea in collaboration with Ako Aotearoa, to celebrate the success of the DEU project and to launch both the published guide to establishing DEU’s and the DEU report. The Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) Project is a joint initiative between Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) and Counties Manukau Health.
The DEU research project was supported by the Ako Aotearoa National Project Fund. Two Dedicated Education Units at Middlemore Hospital were established and piloted in early 2009.
Unit staff and students are assisted and supported by a Clinical Liaison Nurse (CLN) appointed from the clinical area and an Academic Liaison Nurse (ALN) appointed by MIT. Students from all MIT undergraduate nursing programmes are placed in the DEU simultaneously to facilitate peer learning. As at semester 2 (2012) there are 7 inpatient, 2 Mental Health DEU’s at Middlemore and a DEU pilot in Age Related Residential Care (ARRC).
